Starting the year with owling

We started our big year at 4:45  am owling.  Two very kind and generous local birders allowed us to go with them on their yearly New Year’s owling loop. We stopped at a lot of places but we only found 2 Northern Pygmy Owls at Waddell Creek and 1 Barred Owl at the Black River.  (They also saw/heard Saw-whet and Barn Owl, but we missed those.)

At around 10 am we counted 3 acres of  our 23 acre “yard” and got all the usual yard birds: Song Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Fox Sparrow, Steller’s Jay, Black Capped Chickadee, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Redwing Blackbird, Anna’s Hummingbird, Dark-eyed Oregon Junco, Northern Flicker, Ruby Crown Kinglet.  We also had Red-tailed Hawk perched in the big tree, which was a surprise, usually we only see them fly over.
